DVD decryption is done through the libdvdcss library. VLC on GNU/Linux, Solaris, and Microsoft Windows has playback control support via libcdio and libvcdinfo.

The 10 second clip plays fine audio and video here with QuickTime Player 7, MPEG Streamclip, and VLC. QuickTime 10 behaves as it does on your computer, but that is normal for AC-3 files.

The Perian version of A52Codec.component in:

/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/

has been replaced with the special Mountain Lion version. It is 194 KB. The Perian version is much larger.

The only other file in that folder is Flip4Mac WMA Import.component

but it does contain the Perian files AC3MovieImport.component and Perian.component.

Did you remove the obsolete QuickTime Components: FFusion, Xvid Delegate, 3ivX, DivX, DivX Decoder, XviD, msmpeg4v1, msmpeg4v2, AviImporter, EX_M4S2, Casio AVI Importer, AC3 Codec, and MatroskaQT. See:

For many Mac OS X Mountain Lion users, the OS X system brings them quite a lot of inconvenience to play movies with AC3 audio codec such as MKV with AC3, AVI with AC3 due to the lack of AC3 codec support built in the system. Thanks to TechiSky, who gives a solution for AC3 codec on Mountain Lion, people can finally enjoy MKV AC3 videos and AVI AC3 audios easily but only in multi-channels. For OS X 10.9 users, they can also take atvantages of TechiSky s tricks to make AC3 work on OS X Mavericks.

Download and install Perian on OS X 10.9 Mavericks.

Donwnload the a52codec.component

Unzip it. It should replace the one in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components or /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components the Library folder in your Home folder. You can simply press Command Shift G and type in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components to locate Components folder to replace.

Select multi-channel output in perian preferences.

If you wish play MKV AC3, MKV DTS, MKV FLAC or AVI AC3 in 5.1 surround sound on OS X Mavericks, you will need to convert MKV or AVI to MP4 AC3 5.1 or MP4 AAC 5.1 by some professional tool.
